One of the best cultural events this Spring is Desert X.  The plainest way to describe this spectacular art exhibition is when the landscape of the low desert is transformed into an art gallery platform – presenting large-scale contemporary art that “engages with desert environments through site-specific installations by artists from around the world.”

Artistic Director Neville Wakefield and Co-Curator Diana Campbell hail from around the world art institutions with critically acclaimed accolades. Their vision, come-to-life, champions audiences and artists who find the walls of museums and galleries limiting. Springtimes perfect weather with open clear skies, is the perfect backdrop and time of year to enjoy this cultural activity for all people of all ages.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of these exhibitions is listening to and engaging other’s opinions and playful reactions happening among the diverse group of strangers. The visitor’s experience of the No.1225 Chainlink maze by Rana Begum mimics the very concept behind her piece. Begum diffuses the chainlink as a divider and unifies as it “offers paths of expansive escape rather than reductive confinement.”

Desert X 2023 is now open and will run through May 7, 2023 through the Coachella Valley. The exhibition will activate the desert landscape through 12 installations by artists from Europe, North America and South Asia, whose poetic and immersive works span sculpture, painting, photography, writing, architecture, design, film, music, performance and choreography, education, and environmental activism.
